What The St. James Springfield VA Offers
1. 24-Hour Fitness Center
The St. James features top of the line equipment from treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, weight training equipment, and a state of the art strength and conditioning center.
My favorite thing about the health club is the group fitness classes they offer. I’m definitely more motivated by classes vs. working out solo. The St. James offers a variety classes from cycle, barre, yoga, zumba, pilates, etc. I’ve really enjoyed barre and terra firma, but I can’t wait to try more of the group fitness classes!
2. Pool House
The Olympic sized competition pool (which is home to the USA swim team) is way more than what we need for just floating around, but we love it! The pool is gorgeous, well maintained, and there is always a staff lifeguard. The facility has life vests, floating noodles, and small kickboards that are perfect for the kids to use in the water.
It also houses the indoor water park, which is an extension of Super, Amazing & Awesome. The water is usually around 82 degrees and definitely comfortable enough for us. The pool & the indoor waterpark is open every day for members, although the hours vary.
3. Super Amazing Awesome
The kids absolutely LOVE Super Amazing Awesome! There are so many different activities to participate in and definitely a fun spot to host a birthday party!
- Nerf Zone Battle Zone
- Safety glasses are given for protection from the nerf guns used. The kids and I go through the obstacle course and slides, but we don’t engage in the nerf play. Just watch out for flying darts!
- Ninja Warrior Course
- Trampoline
- Special grip socks are needed for the trampoline. Each pair costs $3 if you don’t own one.
- Climbing Walls & Ropes Course
- Interactive Waterpark
- The water park is a lot of fun! There are a lot of sprayers and buckets. There are smaller open slides, which are good for younger kids. The larger closed slides were even a little bit scary for me, although fun! A lifeguard is also there at all times although the water level is pretty low there.
- Virtual Reality Games [additional cost]
Super Amazing Awesome is definitely geared for a little bit older kids, but our 22 month-old definitely tries to keep up with his big brother. The floor is not padded so I would recommend keeping a close eye on your younger kiddos.
Super Amazing Awesome is free for members before 3 PM and all day on Thursdays.
The waterpark is by the pool but considered part of Super Amazing Awesome. It is always free for members.
4. Laugh Learn & Play
A really great perk The St. James offers is babysitting free of charge at Laugh Learn & Play. You can drop off your child to be watched, while you work out. This service is only for when using the facility, although they do have occasional date night babysitting services for a fee. If your child is having a difficult time there, they will give you a call on your cell phone if you are needed.
You can also sign your child up for classes there from Sign Language to Ninja KIDS. Spaces are limited and sign-ups are available one week ahead through the member portal. It is definitely worth it to try the classes to vary up their activities. Some of the classes are geared toward older kids, from 5+ such as the ParKids & Ninja KIDS.
Overall, the Laugh, Learn & Play space is geared toward younger kids. They have a climbing play zone, toys, coloring, there is a computer with some games, as well as other activities. My 5-year-old enjoys the toys and asks to go there to play!
Laugh Learn & Play Class Descriptions
Here are a few of the classes you can sign up your child for:
The Sign Language Program – is designed to give children ages 4months-3years old exposure to different learning techniques through signage. They will learn ABC’s, basic words, animals, food and themed groups. For the older groups they will learn the same but to a more challenging level. The program is based on improving ways to communicate, body movement, hand-eye coordination, mechanics, cognitive skill development, psychomotor development, collaboration, and fun!
ParKIDS – PLAY like a Ninja! Jump, climb, vault, swing and run! Fun ways to go over, under and around obstacles. Challenge yourself to new heights with our ParKIDS class! Ages 5-9
Ninja KIDS – A body weight class, with obstacles and movement games. Bring out your inner ninja! Movement games that will help those little bodies build strength and body awareness while working on balance, and agility
5. Ice House
Ice skating, hockey games, and lessons utilize the two NHL-sized ice rinks.
The St. James also offers public ice skating and ice skating rentals for a fee. Members can skate for free on certain days – currently Fridays at 7 PM and Sundays at 3:30 PM (as of 03/2020). We went on a Friday, and they had free skate rentals and a helmet that we could use for the kids. They even have skates big enough for our 1 and 1/2-year-old! It was really fun for our first ice skating experience with the kids.
6. Field House
The field house is a huge facility with high-grade athletic turf, used for football, soccer, and lacrosse. We used it to kick the soccer ball around with the kids for fun! We are considering enrolling our 5-year-old into soccer because we like the program and its facilities.
7. Court House
The courts are used for basketball and volleyball. You can rent a ball from the front desk to shoot around and improve your shooting skills.
8. Climbing Walls
This 40 ft climbing wall looks amazing. We haven’t used the climbing wall yet as we aren’t adventurous enough as a family yet, but it does come with free harness rental and has an auto-belay feature. There are also public hours for the climbing wall.
9. Squash Courts & Golf Simulator // Batting Cages // Gymnastics
The squash courts, golf simulators, and batting cages are additional fees, however, the fees are reduced for members vs. non-members. Training, instruction, private lessons, and leagues are available for these sports as well as all sports offered at The St. James.
The Gymnastics center is amazing and so much fun! We tried open play at the gymnastics center for the younger kids. Both the kids jumped right into things – they loved the balance beam, jumping into the soft blocks, and trying all the gymnastics equipment. They have two different time slots – one for younger kids 5 & under, and another time for older kids 5+. You can reserve a spot through the member portal.
9. Courted Spa
Courted is a full-service spa with an abundance of treatments from massages, facials, manicures, and even a medispa. I haven’t gotten around to trying the spa yet, so I’ll update my review after I try it!
10. Locker Room
The locker rooms have a sauna and steam room for use. The showers come with soap, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers. There are complimentary towels, makeup remover wipes, and tampons in the women’s locker room. They are clean and well maintained by a staff member.
11. Vim & Victor
The St. James houses its own full-service restaurant, Vim & Victor, with a grab & go section for quick eats. Chef Spike Mendelsohn focuses on healthy & hearty food. We love Bryon’s Green Machine smoothie – the kids’ favorite smoothie! We still need to try more of the restaurant, but the grab & go is great and members get 20% off!
The St. James Springfield VA Review
We really love The St. James. It is such a family-friendly gym/sports complex and we have definitely been able to utilize so many of the activities and amenities available. There is honestly so much to do here and it is a top-notch facility. Everything is brand new, clean, and well maintained. We never get tired of heading there.
The kids absolutely love Super Amazing Awesome and we really enjoy the indoor pool. It is a great facility, where we can enjoy activities with the kids, but also be able to drop them off at Live Laugh & Learn for an hour if I need to take a group fitness class. The emphasis on sports is very clear whenever you are there as you can see so many kids in lots of different sports training every day.
The membership is a bit pricey compared to other gyms, but other gyms do not have nearly as many amenities as The St. James. It definitely can be worth it if you utilize everything from swimming pool, ice rink, climbing walls, and definitely Laugh Learn & Play for the kids. There are member times for certain activities like Super, Amazing, Awesome, but member pricing is always lower for any activity you would like to participate in including the sports camps.
Definitely go for a tour and check out the facilities. Use this link for $0 initiation fee!
